Nassau is the capital city of both The Bahamas, and the island of New Providence. It's the most visited place in all of the islands and has a lot to offer. Stroll down Bay Street to do some duty-free shopping or browse the Straw Market and pick up some distinctly Bahamian crafts. Visit Government House on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. for the pomp and circumstance of the Changing of the Guards ceremony. Climb the steps of Queen's Staircase, carved by slaves into a limestone cliff. There are 65 steps (at one point there were 66) to honor Queen Victoria's 65-year reign. You can find a statue of her in Parliament Square, surrounded by government buildings built in the early 1800s.

In the center of downtown Nassau you'll find Prince George Wharf where all the cruise ships dock and Rawson Square, where you can hire a horse-drawn carriage to take you on a ride through town.

The weather in The Bahamas is almost never bad, but if you need to step out of the sunshine, head to one of Nassau's museums. The Pompey Museum showcases artwork such as a collection by acclaimed native artist Amos Ferguson. The Junkanoo Expo allows visitors to enjoy the colorful and flamboyant Junkanoo Parade, even if they're not here on Boxing Day or New Year's Day. Its collection of costumes will truly dazzle you. As will the Pirates of Nassau Museum where families can step back into the colonial era of pirates with interactive and educational exhibits.

The Retreat is a little natural oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Nassau, with acres of grounds to stroll under gracefully swaying palm trees (almost 200 different species). This is the headquarters of the Bahamas National Trust, and you may walk on your own or opt for a guided tour.
